AMALGAVAC – Smart Suction System

Current Stage of Innovation

TRL

  • The AMALGAVAC system is highly effective at safely capturing amalgam and mercury waste, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Users have praised its easy integration with existing dental suction systems, making it cost-effective for clinics. The system’s practical design allows for minimal maintenance and quick installation. It is considered a sustainable, scalable solution for both small clinics and dental schools. Overall, it is seen as a valuable tool in promoting eco-friendly dental practices and preventing mercury contamination.

  • Mercury used in dental amalgam fillings has long been a subject of concern due to its potential health and environmental hazards. Although amalgam is valued for its durability and cost-effectiveness, the mercury content can pose significant risks when improperly handled or disposed of. During dental procedures such as placement, polishing, or removal of amalgam fillings, mercury-containing particles and vapors are often released into the environment. In many dental clinics, the absence of proper waste management and disposal systems results in these particles entering wastewater, eventually contaminating soil and water sources. Mercury pollution can have severe consequences for aquatic life and can accumulate through the food chain, ultimately affecting human health. Moreover, exposure to mercury vapor poses potential risks to dental professionals over long-term practice. Despite growing awareness, many existing mercury waste capture systems are either expensive, complex, or not widely implemented.
